Kernelization of Whitney Switches

چکیده

A fundamental theorem of Whitney from 1933 asserts that 2-connected graphs $G$ and $H$ are 2-isomorphic, or equivalently, their cycle matroids isomorphic if only can be transformed into by a series operations called switches. In this paper we consider the quantitative question arising Whitney's theorem: Given two 2-isomorphic graphs, transform one another applying at most $k$ switches? This problem is already \sf NP-complete for cycles, investigate its parameterized complexity. We show admits kernel size $\mathcal{O}(k)$ thus fixed-parameter tractable when $k$.

Streaming Kernelization

Kernelization is a formalization of preprocessing for combinatorially hard problems. We modify the standard definition for kernelization, which allows any polynomial-time algorithm for the preprocessing, by requiring instead that the preprocessing runs in a streaming setting and uses O(poly(k) log |x|) bits of memory on instances (x, k). We obtain several results in this new setting, depending ...

Kernelization of packing problems

Kernelization algorithms are polynomial-time reductions from a problem to itself that guarantee their output to have a size not exceeding some bound. For example, d-Set Matching for integers d ≥ 3 is the problem of nding a matching of size at least k in a given d-uniform hypergraph and has kernels with O(k) edges. Recently, Bodlaender et al. [ICALP 2008], Fortnow and Santhanam [STOC 2008], Dell...

Lower bounds on kernelization

Preprocessing (data reduction or kernelization) to reduce instance size is one of the most commonly deployed heuristics in the implementation practice to tackle computationally hard problems. However, a systematic theoretical study of them remained elusive so far. One of the reasons for this is that if an input to an NP -hard problem can be processed in polynomial time to an equivalent one of s...

( Meta ) Kernelization 1

In a parameterized problem, every instance I comes with a positive integer k. The problem is said to admit a polynomial kernel if, in polynomial time, one can reduce the size of the instance I to a polynomial in k, while preserving the answer. In this work we give two meta-theorems on kernelzation. The first theorem says that all problems expressible in Counting Monadic Second Order Logic and s...

Win-Win Kernelization

We study provably effective and efficient data reduction for a class of NP-hard graph modification problems based on vertex degree properties. We show fixed-parameter tractability for NP-hard graph completion (that is, edge addition) cases while we show that there is no hope to achieve analogous results for the corresponding vertex or edge deletion versions. Our algorithms are based on transfor...
